Day 18: Persecution

Today we’re going to look at one more letter from the New Testament; Hebrews. It’s time for another video from the Bible Project which acts as a nice introduction to it:

What do you take away as being the key messages from this letter?

I want to explore one specific point from the video, and I want us to put ourselves in the shoes of the people who this letter was written to. They were part of a church community which was being persecuted for what they believed. When I think about this, I’m struck by just how strong the faith of these individuals must have been to hold steadfast despite the constant threat of being punished simply for what they believed.

There are many instances across the world where even today Christians are persecuted for their religious beliefs, let alone those of other faiths who are not able to practise these openly in public. We take it for granted in our Western society and culture that we are able to express our beliefs publicly and openly, and yet often we choose not to and remain shy about matters of religion!

Some things to ponder on and pray about:

  • How do you think your faith would hold up if your life was in danger as a result of your beliefs?
  • Thank God today in your prayers for the freedoms we enjoy in this country.
  • Pray for those who suffer or live in fear as a result of the threat of religious persecution.
